Local Theatre Groups: Through Ingenuity and Beyond

Performing Arts is still very much existing. Evidently, there are performing arts group who are active in exploring more of their ingenuity.

Performing arts… When I was in high school, it was one of the things i dig and one of the driving forces why I wanted to be on the communication arts field. And then I took a detour. Haha. No regrets.

Meanwhile, if you will be attending the “Ani ng Sining, Ani ng Lipenyong Galing” Culture and Arts Month celebration, you’d get to witness three of the most, I say, clever theater groups we have here in Batangas.

(Ed.’s NOTE: The following accounts were sent to us by PIAF Lipa City)

MA-ISUG

Ma-isug is a Tausug term, which means brave. It takes bravery or courage to act or perform. Ma-isug is the name of the collaborative group formerly called Ingenue. The group was formed in the summer of 2009 by actor-friends Betty Uy-Regala, Opaline Santos, and Hogi Cadlum. They have performed in alternative spaces (alternative to the formal theatre venues) namely, Avellana Art Gallery, Mag:Net Café and Bar, Shotlist Bar, and the Shangri-la Plaza Mall.

In Avellana Art Gallery, the group performed Nemesis, a one-act play by Peter Wilson. In Mag:Net Gallery and Shotlist Bar, the group performed an original piece written by Jenny Logico entitled ‘para hindi mo ito maintindihan’. In the Shangri-la Plaza Mall, the group performed a poem by Maningning Miclat entitled Why A Mural?

TANGHALANG HULYO BEINTE-TRES, INK

Tanghalang Hulyo Beinte Tres Ink., is an independent University Based Theater Organization composed of students and young professionals from Polytechnic University of the Philippines who had undergone series of extensive Theater workshops and Leadership Trainings.

Some of their numerous accomplishments are: Delegate NCR Theater Congress – 1st Place S.A.D. LIPA ACTORS COMPANY

The Lipa Actors Company (LAC) is the most promising theatre organization in the Batangas. Premiered in Dulaang Viajero Filipinas Performance Lab in 2008 sponsored by Lipa City Culture & the Arts Council, the company is now presently embarking in its first theatre season in Lipa City with season performance dubbed as PAGBABAGO2010!!!.

A non-stock, non-profit organization, LAC’s objective is the promotion of positive values through theatrical productions and at the same time advancing discipline, creativity, and artistry in the performing arts in Batangas and the CALABARZON. The company also believes in the prospect of the continuous expansion of the performing arts industry in the south of Manila and Batangas as the center for artistic development in CALABARZON.

Composing of five company members and 10 apprentice actors coming from different theatre groups in the country like Lipa Community Theatre, BSU Cultural Guild, Drama Club of New Era University, Little Theatre of University of San Agustin in Iloilo, the merging of talents and friendship became beneficial in the company’s continued success.

The passion for performance and a common goal of advancing local performance attracts more and more promising young Batangueno artists. Because of the heighten interests from the community, the company established the THEATRE FOR BATANGAS PROJECT (TFBP) which is an initiative that provides after school arts and cultural programs to diligent youth in Lipa City and neighboring communities.

The TFBP has now extended its theater programs with dedicated mentors and students from Lipa City and nearby towns. TFBP includes ESI LITTLE THEATER – a theater program for kids which is supported by ESI Events International, TECHNICAL THEATER – with apprenticeship in production design, sound & lighting techniques and stage management, THE ACTORS APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM and ASIAN ARTS IN TRANSITION which is an international study-exposure workshop and performance that focuses on recent development in theatre arts of South East Asia.
