It was like a dream come true for Penelope Ann R. Matanguihan or better known as Penelope when she received the nods of Pinoy Idol judges during the Batangas Pinoy Idol audition. According to Penny, she really did not expect it for there were thousands of hopefuls who auditioned for the said prestigious singing tilt. And likewise she did not expect that this will lead her to the path of becoming a star.
Though born in Bonn, Germany, emanating in this talented and charming young lady is a pure Batangueno blood. She is an unica hija and unquestionably a blessing to her proud parents, Mr. Wilfredo and Violeta Matanguihan of Mataasnakahoy, Batangas. “Sobrang nagpapasalamat nga po ako sa parents ko for everything. Marami na po silang nasacrificed para sa akin. Palagi po nilang akong sinusuportahan sa mga gusto ko like sa singing. Sana nga po ay masuklian ko po yun someday. Gaya nila, love ko rin po sila sobra” Penny expressed. (I really thank my parents for everything. They have sacrificed so much for me. They always support me with what I want like singing. I wish I could pay them back someday. Just like them (parents) I also love them so much. )
“Kaya po nung nagawa kong makasama sa final 14 Pinoy Idol hopefuls, sobrang tuwa ko po kasi nakikita ko po yun as chance to make my parents proud and happy,” Penny added. (That’s why when I was able to make it to the final 14 Pinoy Idol hopefuls, I felt so happy because I could see it as a chance to make my parents proud and happy.)
Penelope was 16 year old then when she joined Pinoy Idol. The youngest of all Final 14 Pinoy Idol contestants. With her stunning performances she was able to wow people from the Music industry like Ogie Alcasid, Jolina Magdangal, Jaya, Freestyle, Regine, Wyngard Tracy and more. In fact, Ogie said that he is a proud Batangueno because of Penelope.
Penny is best remembered with her interpretations of songs, Beauty and Madness, One Step at a Time, So Sick, Wild Horses and Everything I do, (I Do It For You). Though young and innocent, she was able to whole heartedly interpret the songs. With her performances on Pinoy Idol Stage, one could really say that Penny is indeed a star in the making.
When asked about her secret on why she sing that well and where did she get her inspiration, Penny said, “ I just sing from the heart, tsaka inaalay ko po ang kanta ko kay Lord, sa parents ko at sa mga tao.” (I just sing from the heart, and I offer my songs to the Lord, to my parents and to other people) Like the one she did during the Pinoy Idol audition, when she sang the song Amazing Grace.
With her singing prowess, almost everybody expected that she will be the very first Pinoy Idol. But maybe it is not yet the right time for our young idol. She did not make it up to the finals but astoundingly and remarkably, she was able to make it to top 7 toppling out the other seven hopefuls. It was not bad at all for our young diva, in fact she said, “Sa una pakiramdam ko tapos na, pero maganda yung experience para sa akin. Blessed pa rin ako. Siguro, isa po ito sa mga highlights ng buhay ko.” (At first, I thought it was already the end, but it was a good experience for me. I am still blessed. I think, this is one of the highlights of my life.) Penny’s statement really holds true, because not all singers are given the opportunity to be seen on national TV, be idolized by many, and perform with known artists before a large number of audience nationwide like her.
Right now, Penny is prioritizing her studies. She is now an incoming second year college at De La Salle Lipa under the ComArts program. “Minsan po kumakanta pa rin ako sa mga events and occassions kasi, passion ko po talaga yun. Tsaka way ko na rin po yun ng pagpapasalamat sa mga tao. Pero syempre, kelangan pa rin unahin ang pag-aaral before anything else. Importante kasi ang education,” she explained. (Sometimes, I still sing (perform) on events and occassions, it (singing) is really my passion. And this is my way of thanking people. But of course, I still need to prioritize my studies before anything else. Education is important.)
Our young idol added, “I would still want to be visible for other people pa rin naman po kaya pag minsan po gumagawa po ako ng cover with the Guitartutee team. Masaya naman po ako kasi pakiramdam ko, I am once again back on stage this time with a bigger audience –the internet. (laughs)” Basta I remain thankful to our Dear God for endowing me with this talent and to my parents for their love and support.
With all these we can truly say that Penelope, a beautiful, charming, talented and kind-hearted young lady is a star that will continue to shine.
