Batangas City got its name from the word “batang” which is the early locals’ term for the big logs which used to float on Calumpang river. The settlement was then called “Batangan” in 1581.
It was in 1601 that Batangan was changed into Batangas. It became the capital of the province in 1754 and through Republic Act No. 5495, it then became a city on July 23, 1969.
Batangas City is tagged as the Industrial Port City of Calabarzon because of the urban development that characterizes its status. It is where the Batangas Port, now an International Port, is located.
