A Flashback at ’90s Cartoons: Reliving Our Childhood Superheroes

Childhood, I think, is almost synonymous to the cartoons we watched.

Tons of memories of the cartoons we have watched are sure to be talked about when childhood reminiscing comes to be the topic.

And if you ask me what characters I fancied the most then these will be my answers:

Doreamon (Doraemon)
Doraemon, as I have just found out, means “stray”.

Though I think it has barely an inch to do with the character that doles out gadgets from his magical pocket and lends it to Nobita to help the latter with his seemingly gargantuan issues.

The Doraemon series is pretty much a notch higher than the other cartoons. Why? Because the episodes mainly focus on values such as integrity, perseverance, respect for elders and other values that a child has to learn about.

In that light, Doraemon (the show) has received various awards from Japanese institutions.

The show was awarded The Japan Cartoonists Association Award for Excellence in 1973, A Manga Award for Children in 1982 and was even distinguished as Japan’s First Anime Ambassador—and those were only some of his notable achievements.

Unbeknownst to many, Doraemon was also presented as a musical which was entitled “Doraemon the Musical: Nobita and the Animal Planet” at Tokyo Metropolitan Art Space on September of 2008.

Kiminobu Kogure(Slam Dunk)
I have this thing for good, almost- saintly characters. And my heart would always cheer for this kind-hearted lad.

Though he spends much of his time on the bench, he sure is a force to reckon with when he’s on the court.

One of the notable episodes of his is when he was slapped and was brutally insulted by Mitsui (a then enemy and ex- player of Shohoku) and he did nothing for he still considers Mitsui a good friend.

God knows how I almost cried that afternoon.

Majin Buu (Dragon Ball)
Come on. He’s a kontrabida.
And he’s color pink.
Even George Estregan can’t top that.
(A close second to him is Mister Popo)

Vincent (Ghost Fighter)

Vincent is the darkest among the Ghost Fighter cast. He’s the most mysterious; most serious and most (put any cool word here)___.

Ghost Fighter is one of the two reasons why I come early from school. The other one is in the name of Slam Dunk.

Also, his face is one of the easiest things to draw. I could still clearly remember my drawings of him when my elementary teacher poured in the homily.

Zenki (Zenki)

Palakol Ni Divaaaaaaaa! Would always be my favorite non-wrestling wrestling move. Thanks to that proverbial line of Zenki, the superhero with a sungki.

Super Boink (Super Boink!)

Ba Be Bu Be… Boink!
‘nuff said.

And the list goes on 🙂

Okey, okey. I’m not what you call the manga, cosplaying expert. Hell, I don’t even know what the differences among anime, manga and cartoons are.

But please forgive me if my list isn’t as old school or as cool as yours. My knowledge of the cartoons would only go as far as the middle 90s. My apologies, I am *that* young. hehe.

Yours may include the Voltes Fives, The Cedis, The Huck Finns and the what have yous.

But isn’t it fun to talk about these stuffs? If you have other characters in mind, blurt them out. My ears (and of others too) would surely be delighted. 🙂

Oh, how I miss the joy of watching them. 🙂
