It was Kenly’s first time to join a photo contest which gave him his first win and his first DSLR camera.
This is Kenly Heywood Anillo’s story of firsts and perseverance in pursuing something he truly wants.
The Shutterman
Our My Hometown’s Finest Photo Contest grand winner hails from Poblacion 2, Talisay, Batangas and is a senior BSIT student at STI College Tanaun.
I remember Kenly when the finalists were asked to come up on stage in Saturday’s awarding program. Napakatahimik. He’s the typical quiet guy but I saw that photographer’s aura in him. Kenly traveled all the way from Talisay to SM City Batangas just to participate in the event.
Kenly did not expect his winning. “Happy [ako], pero hindi makapaniwala kasi marami namang mas maganda ang entry kesa sa akin,” Kenly humbly expressed.
Kenly’s interest in photography started to grow when he was in his college freshman year. “Ang tawag nga po sa ‘kin ng mga classmates ko ay shutterman, kasi kahit anong kakulitan basta ko na lang kinukunan,” he shared.
Since then, taking pictures of anything that caught his interest started to become an everyday thing. He’s fond of walking around, exploring his hometown and its underrated beauty.
When asked about his favorite subject, Kenly openly shared he might excel on fashion photography. “May classmate nga akong nagsabi na pwede daw akong maging wardrobe art director,” said Kenly. He had this photo shoot he did with some friends where his models wore costumes made of newspaper.
What will he first take a shot of with his brand new Canon 1100D SLR?
“Talisay po syempre. Marami po akong natutunan katulad nung dapat kapag kumuha ka ng litrato dapat may istorya, malalim yung meaning mo,” the 19-year-old Kenly shared.
On Joining My Hometown’s Finest Photo Contest
“First time ko pong sumali sa isang photo contest… May friend po ako na nagbukas ng website ng WOWBatangas tapos nakita nya po [yung tungkol sa contest] sabi nya sumali daw ako dun.
“Nanghihiram lang ng po ako ng phone kapag magpipicture, like yung N73 cellphone o kaya naman digicam.” Kenly borrowed a friend’s point and shoot digicam which he used for taking his photo contest entry.
He did not have a hard time campaigning for his MHFPC entry as a lot of his classmates and friends helped him all throughout the contest. Kenly even asked for the support of a Facebook group, Huntahang Talisay, where he is a member.
How did he choose the subject for his MHFPC entry?
“Hindi ako masyado gumagala sa Talisay eh. Nagpasama lang ako sa friend ko maghanap ng kukunan, sabi nya sa Balidbirin, Buco daw kami magpunta.
“Dapat yung Taal lang ang kukunan ko tapos nagkataon na may mga batang namimingwit ng isda. Nagtataka sila sakin bakit ako picture ng picture.”
In the morning of July 16, Kenly asked his mom how to go to SM City Batangas. He even had a scheduled exam in the afternoon of that same day but he still pushed through to attend the awarding program.
Kenly was with his mom when he went here in the office to get his prize. His mom only learned that her son joined the contest the same time Kenly told him he actually won. She was in tears of joy when she heard the good news. And that good news swiftly reached their kababayans in Talisay and they were all proud of Kenly’s achievement.
Kudos to you Kenly! People with the determination to pursue what they want are blessed with the chance to actually materialize their goals and dreams. This is probably one of the sweetest victories for Kenly Heywood Anillo.
By fair chance and judgment, Kenly won. No further explanations needed. Only if you asked. 😉
