Balisong is among the things that Batangas is famous for. But in the video below, you’d see quite a sad truth about the industry that seemed to be losing its luster — like a newly sharpened Batangas blade.
These are a few words from the video contributor, Ray Leyesa of Lipa City:
Whenever you say Batangas or Batangueño, there are two things that quickly come to mind, one is the kapeng barakong and the other is the balisong. Both have received their own share of fame through television shows and films. And yet it is unfortunate to see that both legitimate industries, symbols that Batangueños can associate with, are being somehow being ‘set aside’ by the government and fellow Batangueños as well.
This short video does not promote violence of any kind. Carrying a balisong around is still illegal. Promoting the balisong as a souvenir that can be displayed in glass cases or frames at home, however, is not. The industry merits recognition and is worth saving as an important piece of Batangueños cultural identity.
Mr. Dindo Montenegro clearly expressed this aspect of the knife in his interview. “I would always say that one reason for pushing the buyers to acquire a balisong is because the only thing that would make one proud in having gone to Batangas is getting a souvenir that is identifiable to the province,” said Montenegro.
