What the Cybercrime Law ‘Teaches’ Us

Republic Act 10175 or the Cybercrime Law was created to protect Filipinos against cyber criminals and prevent any illegal activities online. Part of this Cybercrime Law is the highly debated online libel.

If you post a slanderous statement against someone on your blog or on your Facebook and Twitter accounts, that person can sue you for online libel. If your friends liked, re-tweeted, or commented on your post, they won’t get penalized. Only the original author will be, and in this scenario, it’s you.

Critics cried foul for two popular reasons: (1) it controls the public’s freedom of expression online and (2) the government should have prioritized other much important laws than this one.

But it’s practically the restriction on online freedom of expression that some (perhaps a lot of) people thought of as unfair.

Will this law stir a battle between the one who’s telling the truth and the one who’s right was violated online?

In simple, uncomplicated conclusion, this law will ‘teach’ us not to badmouth, degrade, dehumanize anyone in public. Your social media accounts, even if your profile is private (when you have to approve the ones you want to have connection with), is still a public platform.

Gaano man kasagad hanggang langit ang galit mo sa isang tao o gaano ka man kaasar sa disposisyon/nagawa/nasabi ng isang tao, kalma muna bago click.

But the Cybercrime Law is not just about online libel. There are still other provisions for us to consider that this law is no nonsense.
