He was just a young boy who sewed the stalls of fashion boutiques in the public market with his youthful steps and observant eyes.
He was just a dreamer who weaved his dreams on the pages of his school notebooks with naïve sketches.
He dreamed big and worked hard. And now, he is Batangas’ top fashion designer. He is Janine Hernandez.
Janine knew nothing about fashion designers when he was a child. He said it was just because of his personal interest that he enhanced his talent in sketching and designing. His humble beginnings set off at the age of 14 when he started creating miniature gowns for his sister’s doll and eventually moved to sewing shorts to sell every vacation.
Just like any other designer, everything did not happen in just one snap of a finger. He went through tough and challenging times considering the financial status of his family. He went through all these with a handful of hope; each stride directed in making his juvenile dreams into reality.
Because of financial instability, at 20, he decided to put up a beauty parlor, juggling this with his studies and his fashion designing. The business lasted for four years until he was able to save money enough to finally open his fashion boutique in 2000.
This Batangenyo fashion designer started everything on his own – from managing the boutique to designing, sewing, and beading his gowns. It took the business 3-4 years before it became stable along with the rushing in of clients, having Dr. Rellosa (owner of MS Supermarket) as his first customer and is still his loyal patron up to now. His regular clients are the Adajar’s, Gardiola’s, Pastor’s, Amorado’s, Lat’s, and the Magsino’s, of Batangas.
Janine shares on putting his character in all his creations being meticulous, detailed, unique, and indulges more on quality – making this his trademark in the industry. His expertise is on gown creations but he is also creating casual wear and other customized and up-to-date fashion apparels.
Being the Best Designer in Hairway 2001 and Batangas Region Cover Girl Best Designer are just two of his greatest achievements so far. His creations reached the most prestigious beauty pageants such as Bb. Pilipinas, Mutya ng Pilipinas, Ms. Philippines, and Ms. Philippines Earth.
With enough money for expansion, Janine would want to have his own garment factory just like Chanel which has its own line of perfume, shoes, bag, and RTW. Together with his sister, Maricel Hernandez, he is currently designing and creating bags but these are not yet available in the market. All their creations are housed in his boutique near SM City Lipa which is open from 8am-9pm everyday, including the holidays.
Janine Hernandez is a true-blooded Batangueno, born in July 4, 1976. He went to The Mabini Academy in high school and took up Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in English at Lipa City Colleges. His talent and enthusiasm in fashion design was polished in Cora Doloroso Carrer Centre for Fashion Design and in Fashion Institute of the Philippines under the Paris and Milan Pattern Techniques course.
Janine hopes to have actress Anne Curtis wear his creations. This isn’t far from reality because I’m sure, Janine would make his way to being known around the country, and who knows, across the globe.
In his every stitch you can trace his journey towards fulfilling a life-long dream. In his pattern reflects the creative mind and humble soul of an inventive designer. In his creations beam magic, both of beauty and of life.
This is Janine Hernandez.
