Moment of Unity: A Nostalgic Event in EDSA

It has been 23 years since our country had regained its freedom from the dictatorship of Marcos’ administration. The entire Filipino populace unified towards ousting the leader who imposed them political burdens for a long time. There were high rates of extrajudicial killings, incidences of oppressions, unequal distribution of wealth, poor justice system and worst, the suppression of free press.
Such was a tragic setting that roused Filipinos to take collective actions in bringing back their lost freedom; thus, Filipinos had the biggest revolution in EDSA on the 25th of February 1986. Though I haven’t been born when the revolution happened, hearing about it is as if I were a part of the historical event. I am just so proud of being a Filipino for having proven the strength of our solidarity. Our race will do anything just to protect and defend the country’s welfare against all odds. To whatever means, we continuously uphold the value of patriotism. This idea motivates me to do my own contribution. I know that constitutionally, we are in democratic country but also believe that there is no absolute freedom for us.
I am a journalism student and a development communicator who wants to serve the nation by divulging what the reality is which concerns Filipinos. What bothers me is the fact that despite freedom of the press, there still exist such incidences where media people are oppressed, threatened and maltreated. So alarming as well is the increasing cases of kidnappings nowadays.
To speak in behalf of the Filipino people, I condemn those acts being done by our fellowmen who lacks concerns for others. They have no right to abuse their own freedom for it should be shared by everyone. Why don’t they try to reflect on themselves just to realize that we are in a single nation? Supposedly, we must duly give respect and love for one another.
For our country to foster, the current administration should also address the continuous dilemmas in Filipinos’ lives which hinder real freedom. There is always a room for better changes. Let us also use every individual’s function and do our part in nation building.
As a Christian, I always hope that there are great opportunities and blessings to come my way. I always believe that there are ways to correct my mistakes and chances to make wise decisions. Through the glory of God, I expect that time may come; I can bring about magnanimous contributions that will lead every Filipino to a more productive state of living. Above all, I pray that every one of us would uphold the glory of solidarity and concern for one other. Just like what happened in EDSA two decades ago, let us relive the moment of our unity.

  1. This was something to see outside Camp Crame. Filipinos of all backgrounds standing together in support of each other. Something I had not ever seen or experienced in my life till then and have not witnessed again. This photo was taken from the gate of Camp Crame. I was in the right spot at the right time when one of General Ramos’ aides passed the Philippine Flag to him. The photo was published in Fr. Reuter’s book People Power and was published in color for the July 86 cover of Asia Magazine.
