Philippines in 24 Hours: On Painful Truths and Almost Happy Ending

With what’s happening in the country today, is it hard for every Juan dela Cruz to continue dreaming for a better life? When we are put on the world’s centerstage, it’s either for a good reason or a bad one.

The Philippines is again befaced with such a disheartening event rooted from a long endured problem of an individual who struggled to bring back what he thought was taken away from him unfairly. What occured at the Quirino Grandstand yesterday shocked the nation and even the culprit’s own family.

The hostage drama which took eight lives including that of the hostage taker, former Capt. Rolando Mendoza, left another murky stain on our country’s image. It ended on a sorrowful note. And I’m not going into details, it’s all over the news.

On the other side of the world, our Miss Universe 2010 representative, Maria Venus Raj ended up as 4th Runner-Up. Sayang. But she’s one Filipina that we should all be proud of. You made us proud, Venus. And we are praying that Venus would somehow, in her own way, ease the pain of the Filipinos dispirited with the tragic end of yesterday’s hostage drama.

Pray, everyone. That’s the least we could do.

  1. Philippines, let us not faint and worry. Good things happen. Bad things happen. But let us continue to be proud of our country. Be the change that we want for our country. Congratulations Ms. Raj!

  5. Honestly, I symphatize more on Rolando (the hostage taker). Why? None of us really know if he’s really guilty of that drug smuggling ek ek that he was convicted (or accused) of. We all know, how the Philippine politics works and convicting a person of something is very possible with money. Taking a hostage is a very desperate move to regain honor…and that’s just him – a man who had become depressed, desperate and at his last resort.

With Venus, well, what can I say, the question was simple. She almost won the crown but she got overwhelmed with the happenings and there it goes – no major major problem!
