Archbishop Rosales on Pondong Batangan, Community Savings for the Community

“Anumang Magaling Kahit Maliit, Basta’t Malimit, ay Patungong Langit”
Did you know that the concept of Pondo ng Pinoy was was based on Pondong Batangan which Archbishop Gaudencio B. Rosales started in his former archdiocese, the archdiocese of Lipa? (where he served for 10 years) The Pondong Batangan was the fruit of the Lipa’s own archdiocesan pastoral assembly which produced the Aral ng Batangueno, the blueprint for doing and living Pondong Batangan.

For three years now, Pondong Batangan with its aim to have a community savings for the community, has been expanded and now being adopted in the country. This is of course through the earlier mentioned Pondo ng Pinoy of Archbishop Rosales. “Desire it!” Manila Archbishop Gaudencio B. Rosales challenged Filipinos to desire development, progress, and fullness of life, because “desire is a reality waiting to be fulfilled.” And the means to realize this desire is through Pondo ng Pinoy (PnP), a movement toward social development aimed at changing people’s attitude on sharing, giving, and loving. In his talk during the conference with media and business cooperators of Pondo ng Pinoy last March 29 at the Villa Immaculada restaurant in Intramuros, Archbishop Rosales said that Pondo ng Pinoy is part of his vision for the Archdiocese of Manila.

Let me share with you the excerpt from the Archbishop talk during the launching of Pondo ng Pinoy.

“And you know Pondo ng Pinoy actually developed in the country by changing the attitudes of the Filipino. In Pondo ng Pinoy we are opening up their eyes wide and their vision, with Pondo ng Pinoy we are giving them new attitudes, with Pondo ng Pinoy we are giving them new mental attitudes, with Pondo ng Pinoy we are verifying values of sharing, starting with the little. Why little? Because this is what we would afford. If I start with one thousand pesos, only a few of my friends can afford that but if I ask twenty five centavos literally crumbs, I will touch every Filipino.

That’s exactly what we’re saying a while a go, 25 centavos everyday. And this links of course, with the gospel. I will quote for you Luke 16:19 – 31, what’s that gospel about? You have heard this time and again. “There was a rich man who feasted everyday, he could put up a party at a tip of a finger and everyday he was eating with friends. All kinds of men, all kinds of people, rich people coming in dressed with their best and it happens everyday. And Jesus said at the door there was a beggar so covered with sores. Nobody attended to him only dogs were licking his sores and the beggar was only asking for crumbs, crumbs falling from the master’s table. That’s all what the man was looking for. And then the Lord ended the story. The poor man died and he went to heaven. The rich man died and he was brought to Hadesin the bible means hell. Why? Why wasthe rich man in hell? Because he was rich? Guess your is just good as mine. No one goes to hell because he’s rich. No one goes to hell because he’s wealthy. There are plenty of wealthy people in heaven. But what was the issue in Luke 16:19-31? What was the issue? The poor man. What was he asking for? By the way in the whole gospel, search it, this is the only character in the parable of the Lord where he gave a name to the beggar, to the actor. Search any bible story, I challenge anyone in this room. What’s the name of the prodigal son? Do you know the name of the prodigal son? What’s the name of the father of the prodigal son? What’s the name of the elder son? What’s name of the Good Samaritan? By the way that’s another beautiful story. The sower what’s the name? The man who threw the net in the sea, what’s the name? And they are all characters in the Bible.

How come in Luke 16:19-31 our Lord gave a name to this poor beggar. And you know his name? What’s his name? Lazarus. He will play a big key in the salvation of the world. Now what was Lazarus asking for? Was Lazarus asking to be seated at that table? No. Did Lazarus want to be served the same food? Did Lazarus want to go to the Kitchen? No. Did he want to become rich? No, the poor man did not want to become rich. What was he asking for? “Mumu”, “crumbs”, so the issue of going to heaven is only crumbs.

This, my brothers and sisters is the reason why Pondo ng Pinoy is only asking for 25 centavos. It is easily livable. It is easily practicable. It is easy to give that’s why he said “Anumang magaling kahit maliit basta’t malimit ay patungong langit.” They sing that and if you are ever in the church and hear that being sung by the kids and you hear that verse please join the singing. “Anumang magaling kahit maliit basta’t malimit ay patungong langit.” Join them because that is easy to remember. There’s a rhyme in it.”

With all these, WowBatangas is encouraging not only the Batanguenos but all the Filipinos to partake in this great project, Pondong Batangan and Pondo ng Pinoy.
