Best “Pasalubong” from Batangas Part I

Whenever we go to places, we always look for something to take home. We love bringing home pasalubongs like local delicacies, useful souvenir items like pens, ref magnets, cellphone holders, mugs, wallets and of course the walang kamatayang key chains.

Pero aside from these usual pasalubongs, ano nga ga ang mga masasarap at unique na pang pasalubong from Batangas? Ito ang aming list:

KAPENG BARAKO. Lipa City, aside from being the little Rome of the Philippines, is also the home of original kapeng Barako. Perhaps, it’s the reason why Batanguenos are called Barako. Barako which means strong, magiting at hindi basta basta matitinag. Kapeng barako turned out to be a common name for all coffee from Batangas. It’s actually Liberica coffee grown in Lipa and Mataasnakahoy, and known for its strong taste. You may purchase packs of kapeng barako at Lipa City Public Market and in selected supermarket in the province. If you prefer those with better and “posh” packaging, you may visit cafe de lipa at Brgy. San Carlos Lipa City and at SM City Lipa.

BALISONG. At dahil nga we’re all from lahi ng magigiting at barako, Batangas became famous with our own version of butterfly knives or locally known as balisong. These balisongs or “bente nueve” as others would call it, come in different sizes. Merong cute balisong key-chain, regular balisong size and yung pang Guinness ang laki. (whoa!) If you want to take home some fan knives, you may visit Taal Pubic market or check out those Balisong stalls along Brgy. Balisong road, the road you take when going to Taal Basilica.

SUMANG MAGKAYAKAP at SINUKMANI. You can find the best tasting suman in Tanauan City. Sinukmani on the other hand is another delicacy made from malagkit or gutinous rice.

PANOCHA. This is our version of Baguio’s Peanut brittle. Panocha or panutsa, as some would spell it is made from whole peanuts and very dark raw sugar, also called “panucha” (my lola calls this raw sugar as dulce) shaped in a coconut shell and sold in pairs. Hindi ito mahirap hapanin kasi you can find panutsa almost everywhere. Okay itong pasalubong kasi matagal ang shelf life ng panutsa.

ATIS, SAMPALOK at PASSION Fruit. Isama na rin natin dyan ang sampalok or tamarind that also grow abundantly in volcanic soil of Lobo. Aside from buying freshly picked sugar apple and tamarind, you may also opt to take home some of Lobo products lika “Uukan” napaka-sarap na tinapay, tamarind and atis flavored wine and candies. On your way to Manila, you may drop by at Taysan and buy some vitamin-loaded passion fruits.

WOWBATANGAS T-SHIRTS. Aba, eh papahuli ga kami?

LAMBANOG. Aside from the beautiful beaches, dito rin sikat ang San Juan. Ito ang lambanog or the one we call “the poor man’s drink”. Pero wag ka, our coconut vodka made it to the prestigious Oscar gift bags. Pang international right? Anyway, the best lambanog can be found in San Juan Public Market and in San Juan Pasalubong Center.
