Morning Sweetness: A Glass of Taho

Just in time for a morning post, a taho vendor passed by the office and the Team had a morning bonding. “Tahooooo! Ta-hoooooo!” 🙂

Taho has been a staple food for Filipinos and a special treat loved especially by kids. Made of soften soya bean curd, arnibal (burnt sugar), and sago (tapioca).

Mamang Magtataho (that’s how taho vendors are called) carries two buckets – the bigger one contains the soften soya bean curd while the smaller one has the arnibal and the sago. These two buckets are tied on both ends of a broad stick which Mamang Magtataho puts on his shoulder to balance and carry the buckets.

Mang Steve, the taho vendor earlier shared that the taho comes from Lipa City Public Market. He said it would often took him two rounds around town to empty the buckets.

Eating taho is one thing you shouldn’t miss if you’re a foreigner visiting PH. Taho, aside from being nutritious (it’s rich in protein), carries a culture that we embrace and continue to enrich.

Trivia: Sabi ni Alva, at pinatotohanan naman ni Mang Steve, ang taho daw kapag madumi ay hindi nabubuo.

Eto pa, isang text message na nareceive ko two years ago:

“I tried my best to make it up to you but you didn’t care. Now that I’m gone, you want me to come back for you? You should’ve woke up earlier to see me!” — Magtatahong sosyal. 🙂

Bakit nga naman kasi madalas na eksena yung sigaw na nang sigaw ang Mamang Magtataho tapos kung kelan malayo na saka mo tatawagin at pababalikin? Relate? Haha.

  1. Talagang ganyan. It’s happened to me when I was young. Kapag narinig mo ang sigaw, ay bigla kang maghahanap ng pera at saka ng baso. Kapag nakuha mo na ang pera at baso, the man yelling “tahoooo” is already one block away. Kasi mabilis silang maglakad at sa sobrang ingay ng mga motor ay mahirap silang marinig unless he is in front of you. Kaya’t ang magandang gawin, befriend mo ang magtataho. Para sa ganoon, hihinto siya sa tapat mo para gisingin ka! “Hoy gising na pare, bibili ka ba!”
