Classes for this year are a bit early. In fact, public schools in the counrty will start their classes on the first day of June. At this time parents are probably busying themselves on buying school stuffs like uniform, shoes, bags, notebook etc. And long queue of people on bookstores and school supplies stores are sure to welcome them.
Perhaps, some pupils/students by now are having mixed emotions – feeling excited about the first day and feeling sad at the same time because the long vacation is over. I commend those young people who spent their vacation helping their parents with their summer jobs and those young ones who seek for practical moves in order to continue their studies. Now that we are all being affec ted by the global economic crises, it is high time for us to probe on ways to save.
WOWBatangas has money saving tips that could somehow help parents and students as they prepare for this another school year.
On Uniforms and Shoes
Open your closet and look for your old uniform. See if it can still be used. If the problem is all about the size, we can simply have it repaired. If the blouse or polo looks old, we coud soak our uniform to this bluish powder we often called “kolor” which can be bought from sari sari stores. We could also asked for old uniforms of other graduates if we know some.
When I was in college, I never experienced wearing new uniform, my skirts and blouse were all from my older sisters (and their classmates’). To make it appear new, I perform the suggestion I shared in the previous paragraph. School is not about uniforms anyway. As long as you maintain cleanliness and neatness, then that’s fine.
If you plan to have new uniforms, then go buy good quality clothing so they’d last the whole year and maybe even more, same goes for those leather shoes. Shoes that are cheap usually last for 8-10 months only. So better to spend more on leather than the cheaper ones. You don’t want to buy shoes every 8 months anyway. and more so, sales and back to school discounts are everywhere!
On School supplies
When it comes to school supplies, Do an inventory first, check for recyclable or reusable notebooks, pens, pencil, crayon and all the school-related materials that you have. For notebooks, you can combine all the unused leaves and make a notebook out of it. It could help you save certain amount of money and you could also help save mother earth. Make a list of the required school supplies. Remember to prioritize and buy the necessities first. By the way, for crayons, try looking for ones with non-toxic label.
For parents, always be on the look out for back to school specials and sales in your area. You may also try hunting for scholarships. Not all of them are based on your financial capacity or your child’s intellect. For example, some organizations give scholarships to children that show good leadership skills.
