Afternoon snack is probably one of the meals anyone could enjoy the most. Well, you are fortunate if you can afford to eat three times a day. And you are blessed if you can eat more than thrice a day.
Merienda is the meal of the day that we often share with our favorite people – family, officemates, significant other. What’s your favorite merienda? Okay, so when it’s just a snack, we don’t want to splurge much (maybe if you’re too hungry you could).
Here in the Philippines, we have quite long list of goodies for merienda. I wonder what’s the top merienda for Batangueños? Let me have a quick rundown of the favorite meriendas here in Batangas.
5. Assorted Bread and Biscuit. There are huge numbers of bakeries here in Batangas and these bake stores have been part of the usual afternoon snack of the locals. So aside from providing hot pandesal in the morning, assorted breads such as kalihim, spanish bread, paborita, egg pie, and the like are among the favorite merienda here and in other parts of the country.
4. Carinderia Special. Often, these may be fried lumpia (meat or veggies), ginataan (ube, kamote, langka, sago, bilo-bilo), or pinindot (a sticky soup-like Pinoy meal made of ground rice balls and sago or tapioca). Added through Facebook comments: sagimis!
3. Burger. Nope, this isn’t your pricey cheeseburger meal with angus beef or chicken fillet. This is the regular burger you can buy at the burger stand near the city or town proper, at the bus terminal, or near your school. Have you tried Angel’s burger? It’s a famous burger stand in Lipa City with an eternal ‘Buy 1, Take 1’ promo. Haha. Burger’s price is P21.50 (or P20.50?).
2. Street Food. This could probably be the cheapest yet one of the most satisfying goods just right for an afternoon snack. Fishball, kikiam, squidball, siomai, isaw (chicken intestine), betamax (squared pig’s blood), adidas (chicken foot), and kwek-kwek (coated quail eggs) are just some of the most famous street foods here in the country. 1. Lomi and Other Noodle Dish. Nothing beats lomi for Batangueño’s merienda. Usually after office or school hours, lomi houses are jampacked with regular customers rushing in for a bowl of lomi special, chami, or pancit guisado.
