As we go out and take all the fun we could get outdoor during summer, it’s always easier to be safe than sorry. And that should be everyone’s mantra for the whole year round, actually.
Department of Health (DoH) had released their health guidelines against common summer diseases and conditions such as sore eyes, sunburn, coughs and colds, skin disease, food poisoning, and dog bites.
Sore eyes, sorry eyes
Conjunctivitis or ‘pink eye’ is an “inflammation is brought on by a viral, bacterial, or allergy infection” (www.eyehealthweb.com) can be transmitted easily through “eye to hand to eye contact”. So keep your hands clean. Don’t rub your eyes until you’ve washed your hands.
Avoid getting ‘toasted’
It’s enough that you’ve flooded your Facebook timeline with photos as proofs that you’ve just returned from a perfect summer vacation. Your sunburn is totally not a cool reason to show off your just-tanned body.
Time-tested prevention: avoid staying under the sun from 10am to 2pm (or until 4pm); use sunscreen with SPF 30 (or at least SPF 15) and higher; don that cover-up, sun hat, and sunnies when you’re by the beach.
Annoying coughs and colds
Even if we all know it’s summer season, unexpected rain showers can still spoil our beach trip or out-of-town getaway. Call it a ‘bipolar weather’, this occurrence causes coughs and colds. And getting sick is really annoying when a trip to Laiya with your friends is scheduled in a few days!
Safeguard your system by taking Vitamin C everyday and as much water as you can that should be between 8 to 12 glasses.
Say no to skin disease, please!
Common skin diseases during summer are sunburn, acne, melasma, rosacea, and heat rash. Your dermatologist (and even Google) will let you know more on how to avoid acquiring such diseases so before you plan all your summer trips, take time to check on the condition of your skin.
Watch what you eat
It’s good to try as many local delicacies as you can in each destination you visit for the season. Just make sure they’re all clean and will be consumed before they’re close to spoiling. Food poisoning is one ugly side of an otherwise exciting food trip.
Who let the [biting] dogs out?
Summer is the perfect time for your kids to enjoy good old Pinoy street games. Plus, allowing them to get active playtime instead of confining them in their room playing computer games all day can do a lot to improve both their social and physical strengths.
BUT, they can be all too jolly and hyper that some stray dogs might disturb their happy time.
Summer is more fun when you’re in perfect condition. Have a happy and healthy summer, everyone!
