“Ecotourism, Climate Change & Economic Development – Local Community Perspectives” this was the theme of the recently concluded 6th North Batangas Summit organized by First Asia Institute of Technology and Humanities (FAITH) School of Management and Bato Balani Foundation. The confab was held last January 27, 2012 at Lima Park Hotel, Malvar, Batangas.
Among the topics discussed during the summit were “Rescuing the Taal Lake Basin” by Atty. Maria Paz G. Luna, Board Secretary of PUSOD, “Assessing the Vulnerabilities of Mt. Malarayat Forest Reserve” by Mr. Enrique Nunez, Manager Verde Island MBCC and President of PUSOD, “Updates on STAR Tollway Balete Interchange” by Mr. Adolfo Dioquino, President/CEO STAR Tollway Corp., “The Importance of Disaster Preparedness in the Era of Climate Change” by Mr. Michal Melchor of International Response Network, “Batangas Ecotourism Road Map” by Hon. Vice Governor Mark Leviste and “Ecotourism Ala Batagas” by Atty. Vicky Antique-Garalza from the office of Provincial Administrator.
The event was attended by faculty members and students from various colleges and universities in the province, officers and staffs from the provincial government and North Batangas municipalities (Sto. Tomas, Tanauan, Malvar, Balete, Lipa, Mataasnakahoy, Talisay and Laurel). There were also some attendees from the different business sectors and non-government organizations in Batangas.
“We need to take care of our environment. We are blessed to have beautiful Batangas, a place for all seasons. Be one with us in fulfilling our mission for Batangas,” Hon. Vice Gov. Mark Leviste concluded.
VG Mark was referring to the following missions that he discussed during the summit:

Create jobs thru tourism.

Create a CULTURE of Tourism.

Make Tourism a revenue center for the provincial government.

Empower the different communities to help in and mutually benefit from promoting tourism.

Improve Tourism appreciation and values among grassroots.

Sustain the rich culture, arts ad history of Batangas alongside tourism.

Involved the different sections in achieving the vission and mission.

Protect the environment and preserve the ecological balance of nature through Ecotourism development.
Indeed, the event has become a great venue for those in the government, NGO and the rest of the stake holders to discuss the concerns, problems and solutions in developing a better North Batangas for us and the generations to come.
