Hit a child, go to jail: Discipline vs. Punishment

The issue on Anti-Corporal Punishment Act resurfaces and spurred various responses from, of course, the lawmakers and the parents.

Hit a child or go to jail. Lawmakers who are advocates of children’s rights are pushing for immediate attention on the said act. Statistics says 8 out of 10 children are being punished the wrong way. They suffer from intense spanking and other forms of discipline that caused trauma and painful marks.

Spare the rod, spoil the child. I’m not in the position to argue as I’m not yet a parent. Maybe this is just a reflection of how I was disciplined when I was younger. I remember how my parents would discipline me when I was a child. I also experienced spanking but there’s no instance I could remember that my parents scolded me with harsh, unnecessary words.

How were you disciplined when you were young? Discipline and punishment. Are these two words synonymous? No. Isn’t it just right that when a child did something wrong, you have to teach them the right thing with discipline. Discipline is synonymous with self-will, self-control, strength of the mind. If the right thing is instilled in his mind, chances are, he would learn from the consequences of doing the otherwise.

Punishment sounds painful and cruel. There are appropriate means of teaching kids to do what’s right. In an early morning show aired today, the issue was discussed. One of them said it’s just okay to spank your child but with your own hands and not with a rod, a leather belt, or anything that might hurt him too much.

Painful marks caused by inappropriate discipline are not only caused by physical hurting. These marks could land on their emotion, self-esteem, and on their young minds.

Discipline vs. Punishment. What’s your stand?
