Love One Another

“Love one another or die,” were the words uttered not by the Lord but by Morrie Schwarz; the words he spoke to his former student Mitchell Albom who wrote the book “Tuesdays With Morrie”. The injunction sounds to me very strong, very categorical and very demanding. Yes, love can be very demanding. And the Lord now commands it. It remains a decision though. In fact you may choose to love or not to love. Which way do you go?

Love is not so much about feelings. Though it may involve deep feelings especially good and wonderful feelings, it does not always manifest itself with ecstatic feelings. And far too many people think they cannot love just because they do not have such kind of feelings. More than just feelings, love is a decision: a decision to care for the happiness of someone you love more than your own despite the fact that it may entail suffering on your part. That’s love. That’s a big decision.

The direction of love is always outward. Hindi pakabig, kundi palabas sa sarili. As Scripture says, “Love is not selfish (1Cor 13:5). The antithesis of love is not hatred but selfishness. Any form of selfishness that creeps into a loving relationship destroys it. Love entails selflessness. It requires self-forgetfulness. So ask yourself, “How far can I go as far as self-sacrifice is concerned?” This question can be a good yardstick of love. And there is no better exemplar than Jesus in terms of loving one another.
