Music Lives On (When Band Members Go Separate Ways)

No official statement was released yet but reports had it that one of the most supported bands in the Philippines, Bamboo, is already disbanded.

Another goodbye news for Ebe Dancel, soon-to-be former lead vocalist of Sugarfree, spread around local blogs that the frontman signed contract with Warner Music Philippines for a solo album set to be released this year.

I am one of the millions of Bamboo fans around who, in a while, will express sadness and disappointment if ever this issue has truth to it. Bamboo Mañalac is one of the best songwriters we have and oh, I heart Ira Cruz. And with Vic Mercado and Nathan Azarcon, these four guys comprise a band which has real talent enough to captivate the interest of Pinoy music fans.

I don’t have anything against frontmen who, after decades of playing music together, leave their band and go solo. Rico Blanco survived doing that and have even tried conquering primetime TV. My man Ely Buendia left the legendary E-heads and lead Pupil.

These bands have been part of Pinoy music scene for years now. They have a long line of followers and their music lives on no matter who decides to leave the band. I remember our recent Christmas party which was made even more special with the team and some of our friends singing E-heads and Parokya ni Edgar’s greatest hits.

Their songs linger through every unfolding year. And even if there are new scenes, new groups, new genre conquering the world of Pinoy music, there would still be constant stars, unforgettable hits, and all-time favorite bands who would stay in our hearts for good.

People leave and the rest move on. Disbanded or not, thank you Bamboo for decades of wonderful music and undying lyrics. Probably we’ll just be waiting for a reunion concert in the future.

  1. may official statement na po. I too, am a fan… mahal natin ang bamboo. irespeto natin ang desisyon nila. who knows? baka mas marami pang magagandang music from the four of them in the future. ito din un atmosphere sa music scene nun umalis si bamboo sa maya noon. pero years later, he conquered the airwaves once again and proved he’s still one of OPM’s finest… Salamat Bamboo! 🙂

    • Thanks Reginald for that. Yes, and like you and the rest of the Bamboo fans out there, I know they would continue to make great music, although not as a group. Sabi nga ni Ely Buendia, members of Bamboo will surely come up soon with a great “reincarnation”. 🙂

      • @Dyan Yep, i believe they would. Just like what Ely B, and the ex-heads did. Namamayagpag sila ngayon sa industriya ng musika… Who knows, 3-10 years from now, the original maya might have a one night concert just like the heads.

        • Can’t wait for that future reunion. I ran across the Tumblr account of Nina Sandejas who gets a lucky dose of offstage moments with the country’s top bands. From Bamboo to Mark Escueta (on the latter’s b-day party) – “It’s been a while, but I’m glad that when I look across the table, I still see my old friend.”

I hope the friendship remains with the rest of the Bamboo guys.
