We celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family on Sunday following Christmas Day. We all know how important the family is. It is the basic cell of the society. In fact it is one’s first community. It is the domestic church. It is where we all came from, where our first encounters happened, where we have been molded. The family may not determine exactly who and what we are right now; but the family always has a very strong influence in the way we are today. We owe a lot from the family of our origin, for it is responsible for our upbringing. We often hear the word “breeding”. This is what the family is about.
The old adage still stands true: “the family that prays together, stays together.” As a basic community the family must not be too engrossed with material well-being at the expense of spiritual welfare. Too often parents spend so much time in providing their children with material things that they forget the importance of praying together and going to church together. There is more to life than money. We all hunger for spiritual food. This should not be overlooked.
Jesus, Mary and Joseph are the best examples of each member of the family. A single mother does not make a family, nor a single father. For a family to be considered such, it must consist of a father, a mother and the child or children. The bond of love is the most important factor in every home. Even if there is material prosperity but if love is lacking, the family becomes dysfunctional. Parents should know how to let love be the priority in all their endeavors and plans. Children should experience in every house a real home. “A house is not a home”, as the song goes. They are two different things. There are families living in mansions but they do not enjoy the atmosphere of a real home. Conversely, there may be families wanting in material house yet they enjoy the love, security and warmth of a home. House is made of material things; home is made of love and respect and warmth. If you have both, thank God.
