We call a Thursday of the holy week Maundy. But really what, in an innocent voice, does Maundy mean?
Maundy as defined by audionet.com means very rare. Now what makes Maundy Thursday err… a Maundy one? It is the day wherein we commemorate the events before Jesus Christ’s crucifixion. Also the day when the Last Supper and the washing of the feet of the 12 apostles happened the day before the death of Christ.
It is also a Thursday that is famous for doing Visita Iglesia – a Filipino Catholic tradition wherein a visitation to seven or nine churches is done to venerate the Passion of Christ. Some even visit 14 churches to symbolize the fourteen Stations of the Cross.
The Passion of Christ – an act that only a few people could pattern their lives on. Maundy, indeed. Doing Visita Iglesia in Batangas would not be a hard task since the province is blessed with a good number of churches.
A good image of this day is a throng of Filipinos on a sunny afternoon doing the proverbial Stations of the Cross. Never mind the fully booked beach resorts in Boracay, it’s the best time to meditate folks! And a responsible Christian wouldn’t take cases of beer for an answer. (Photo Credit: www.edupics.com)

The term Maundy may have also originated from the Latin word mandatum which means “commandment”. And since Maundy Thursday also commemorates the last supper, Mark Tibbits of suite101.com relates it to an instance when Jesus told his apostles to love each other as he loved them.
Come to think of it, Maundy may have a thousand meanings. But to us, Catholics, a Maundy Thursday would only lead to a time of reflection on what Jesus Christ has done for us, what horrible events He had been through for us to be saved from our sins.
Indeed, it is a perfect time to meditate and ponder on the meaning of our existence.
