8.9 Magnitude Quake Slams Japan, Tsunami Might Hit Philippines

A rare major earthquake with a magnitude of 8.9 slammed Japan’s northeastern coast unleashing a 13-foot (4-meter) tsunami that swept boats, cars, buildings and tons of debris miles inland.

The quake struck at 2:46 p.m. and was followed by five powerful aftershocks within about an hour, the strongest measuring 7.1. The US Geological Survey upgraded the strength of the first quake to a magnitude 8.9, while Japan‘s meteorological agency measured it at 8.4.

According to reports, at least 1,000 people were killed. The magnitude 8.9 offshore quake was followed by at least 19 aftershocks, most of them of more than magnitude 6.0. Dozens of cities and villages along a 1,300-mile (2,100-kilometer) stretch of coastline were shaken by violent tremors that reached as far away as Tokyo, hundreds of miles (kilometers) from the epicenter.

Meanwhile, (Phivolcs) Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology raised tsunami alert level 1 nationwide after a magnitude 8.9 earthquake struck the east coast of Japan.
