With the high frequency of volcanic earthquakes recorded in the past days and with the increasing size of recorded earthquakes, Alert level 2 for Taal Volcano was announced few days ago.
Considered one of the most active volcanoes in the world, Taal remained at alert level 1 since 2004. Alert Level 2 means that the public is discouraged to to go up the main crater located at Daang Kastila due to hazardous steam-driven-explosions as well as buildup of toxic gases.
Also, it means that the volcano is undergoing magmatic intrusion that, according to Phivolcs, may lead to an eruption. With this, it is important that people, especially those who are residing near the volcano, are equipped with emergency plans in case Taal volcano erupts.
Here are some of the helpful advice for everyone:
1. EVACUATE. In case your house is located with in a few kilometers of the volcano, you must evacuate it at once. (some barangays located at the following: Talisay, San Nicolas, Agoncillo, Laurel, Balete, Mataasnakahoy, Cuenca, Sta. Teresita, Alitagtag, and Tanauan) It would be better if have prepared an emergency kit, a bag with instant food, potable water, clothes – enough to keep you alive in the next 48 hours.
2. DON’T PANIC. Earthquakes are one among quite normal occurrences with the active volcanoes. Proceed with your emergency plan.
3. BEWARE OF MUDFLOW. Remember in case some sudden rains occur near the volcanic crater, it leads to the abrupt mudflow. This mud often contains the pre-volcanic debris of eruption & hence is hot enough to hard boil the eggs. Hence, you must be ware else, you might have to suffer severe burns owing to the mudflow.
4. BEWARE OF VOLCANIC DEBRIS. You must find for a sage shelter before the eruption as during the eruption the volcano emits with a lot of force the debris high up in the air. This would lead to falling rocks & small stones being emitted out from the crater.
5. WEAR GAS MASK. During thea lot of sulfur is emitted that can cause abnormal breathing or even choking. Be prepared with the gas masks much before the eruption in order to save yourselves from the foul odor and to be able to breathe normally.
6. BEWARE OF LAVA. You must avoid any & all contacts with the most crucial & sever emitted materials of the volcano that is lava. This composes the centerpiece of the volcano and contains burning hot mud that would instantly turn anything that comes in to its contact in to ashes.
7. KEEP UPDATED. Even after the eruption is over, you must wait for the PhiVolcs’ advice regarding the safety and then proceed towards your homes.
