Candies We Love and Gums from the Past

One ‘after lunch chikahan’ with my girls here at the WOWBatangas Home, we recalled the candies and chewing gums that we’ve been missing for like years now. Thinking of those sweet tooth pleaser, the list and the memories of the past went on and on.

Most of these items become known in the ’90s. Some are even from long, long years ago. Others are still in stores up to know while some have disappeared along with time.

Can still remember these famous candies and bubblegum in the Philippines some years ago?

Tootsie Roll. According to Wikipedia, Tootsie Roll is the first penny candy (a candy sold by piece in small stores) to be individually wrapped. There’s the Tootsie Roll log and then a smaller one like an inch long.

Tanda mo ba kung paano kumakapit sa ngipin o sa ngalangala ang candy na ito? Haha.

Benson Eclairs. Sosyal ng pangalan. I think this is the first chocolate-filled candy, the first that I could remember at least. Ganun din kagaya ng Tootsie Roll, makapit sa ngipin.

Nano Nano. “Sweet, sour, and salty — Nano Nano, Nano Nano, Nano Nano!” Haha. Remember the Nano jingle? This Indonesian candy got our taste buds in frenzy with its manis-asem-asin (sweet, sour, salty) flavors.

At kapag narinig mo sa umaga ang Nano jingle, ay, LSS na yun hanggang hapon. Ano-NaNo Rasanya RAME! 🙂

Butterball. Yes, until now we still see this one in sari-sari stores. This one’s one of my favorite candies for life. Remember how you roll this candy all around the inside of your mouth until it slides down to your throat. Ooops! (Photo Credit: nms-portfolio.blogspot.com)

Delimon. I hope you can remember this one. They come unwrapped. These are sugar-coated candies in different colors, different flavors. Please remember this one! And please help me remember the name of this candy! 🙂 I don’t know how it’s really called but I always hear my dad calling it delimon.

Lipps. This could be the culprit why girls become kikay at an early age. Laughs. We still have this in stores but in different packaging na. It was name as such because of how it leaves a red stain on your lips (and anywhere it will come in contact actually).

Choco Bot. I hardly remember this one but Joel reminded me of this one. Yun daw parang Voltes V ang nasa packaging. The failed nemesis of Choc Nut.

White Rabbit. Peel off the almost transparent inner wrapper, put it in your tongue and let it melt then chew on the creamy candy. It’s a piece of heaven, isn’t it?

Caramel Candy. Okay, it speaks for itself. Remember this square candy that’s too hard to bite? Well that’s the catch nga eh. Because of its small size, you have to just let it melt in your mouth just like how other candies are meant to be treated. 🙂

Storck. This may not be sweet (it’s a menthol candy) but this used to be the BFF of smokers until Snow Bear came to existence. Famous among takatak boys and sidewalk vendors. Then it changed its name to Starr.

Big Boy. That baby pink colored gum in red and yellow wrapper. Was this your favorite gum? Yes for me.

Bazooka. Could it be that the eraser that looked like a chewing gum was inspired by Bazooka? And who could forget about Bazooka Joe – the character in the comic strip inside the wrapper of this gum? Asan na nga kaya si Bazooka Joe? 🙂

I’ll have this post end here but if you have other candies or chewing gums form the past that you want to be included here, just leave a note on the comment box below. 😉
