New Year’s Resolutions: Anong Sa ‘Yo?

new year's resolutions listResolutions have been part of the New Year celebration for years now. In fact, the beginning of New Year’s resolutions dated all the way back to 153 B.C. and Janus, a mythical king of early Rome became the ancient symbol for New Year’s resolutions.

Janus has two faces, one in front and one at the back of his head. These two faces became the symbols of New Year’s resolutions as Janus could look forward to the future and look back in the past.

So ano nga ba ang halaga ng New Year’s resolutions? Una, bakit nga ba gumagawa ng resolutions ang mga tao?

Having New Year’s resolutions is like attempting to become a new YOU. Not that you would transform into a totally different person. It’s just a simple way of recollecting what you should be doing to be a better you.

Others don’t take it seriously. It’s like having resolutions just for the heck of it. May iba naman na masyadong dinidibdib ang mga resolutions. Parang nakatali ang mga sarili sa mga resolutions nila.

There are people who would just stop fulfilling their resolutions pag biglang may nabali sila sa kung ano mang resolution nila. According to psychologist, Dr. Margarita Holmes, we call this as relapse. Relapses are common to resolutions especially to those regarding addiction or vices. She said relapses are just normal and this should not stop you from continuing with your resolutions.

How many resolutions should you have? Kahit ilan. Basta ba kaya mong panindigan eh. Another technique is to make ‘positive resolutions’. Instead of saying “I won’t eat cake anymore”, say “I would eat healthier foods” or “I would eat cake only once a month”. This could help you somehow.

One more good thing that comes out from having resolutions is discipline. Syempre nga naman, ayaw magpatalo ng ego mo kaya kahit gaano pa kahirap eh pinipilit mong panindigan ang mga resolutions mo.

In the end, it all boils down to one thing. Fulfilling your New Year’s resolutions would not turn you into a perfect human being. You would always be the imperfect earthling just like everyone else. But you could be the better.
