As early as mid February, several news about sudden climate change – from chilling cold to summer-like hot weather, were reported. And for sure here in Batangas, people have noticed this change too. We can all say that summer is certainly here.
With this, the Department of Health issued a public health advisory on heat-associated ailments such as sunburn, prickly heat and heat stroke which can be fatal.
Sunburn happens when the skin is burned due to exposure to the sun or other ultraviolet light. The signs are when the skin becomes painful and red, or when there is swelling in the leg portions and skin peeling. As prevention measures, the person should use sunscreen, protective clothing, and ultraviolet-protected sunglasses. Wearing the appropriate hat is also recommended.
Prickly heat is a type of heat rash characterized by tiny bumps or even water blisters. The signs are “prickly” sensations and rashes that are similar to the one caused by infected hair follicles. As prevention, the person should take a bath every day, limit his exposure to the sun, to always use a soft cloth or towel todry up one’s skin from excessive sweating,and to wear loose, light clothing materials.
Heat stroke is the most severe form of heat illness. It may start with the following signs of heat exhaustion: warm, flushed skin, faintness, dizziness, weakness and headache. It may progress to an emergency condition. As prevention, the person should limit the time spent outdoors, drink plenty of water, wear a wide-brimmed hat, and must schedule heavy-duty activities at the beginning or end of the day when the temperatures are cooler.
The DoH, aside from cautioning the public from ailments, is also warning the public from food poisoning and recreation associated injuries.
