Power of Two: Lola Aurelia’s Love for Lolo Luis and the Facebook Support that Reunites the Couple

Thanks to the power of social media and the still existing compassion for the elders.

I know this may be a little bit too late but I still want to write about it and how it inspired thousands of people. The story of Lola Aurelia Matias and how she was reunited with her husband, Lolo Luis, is one of the most touching stories shared across the country this week.

It started with a photo shared on Facebook. A white-haired woman was photographed sitting on a bench somewhere in the metro. The photocopied “panawagan” for her missing 78-year-old husband was posted on her back. A concerned netizen, Reddie Js, captured the poignant scene and shared the photo on his Facebook wall.

Until the shared photo reached a countrywide scale. It was reported on TV Patrol World on Tuesday night. I was damn moved to tears. Lola Aurelia and Lolo Luis were reunited Tuesday afternoon when the grandfather who is suffering from memory loss was found in the LRT Quirino Station area. People who recognized the old man who was missing for two weeks feed the good news to DZMM Teleradyo which led to the reunion of the old inspiring couple.

At least a sensible move was done by Filipino Facebook users this week. The malicious and disturbing images scattered all over Facebook, which were claimed as spam allegedly initiated by a Filipino, were utterly shameful. At least the story of Lola Aurelia and Lolo Luis altered the trend this week. At least there’s still some goodness across this social network which is primarily meant to connect people, to connect lives.

Apart from realizing once again the influence of Facebook and other social media, Lolo Aurelia and Lolo Luis allowed us once more to believe in another powerful thing which will never be programmed nor bugged down – the power of love.

There’s nothing too extraordinary in their love story but what stirred social netizens is the loving effort of the 73-year-old Lola Aurelia to find her other half. In this world corrupted with animosity and betrayals, there are still people like the Matias couple who will never give up on love.

I hope we all learned from this couple. It’s more than just a love story that brought inspiration to other people. It’s a story of life and the web of support woven from compassion among strangers.
