Freedom. This seven-letter word can be spelled and pronounced by a six-year old or even a five if the kid drinks one of those milk formulas in the market. But in this world and in this life, freedom means and weighs too much than any individual could comprehend.
The Philippines is celebrating its 114th year of independence. In this time when our lives are run by the geniuses of technology and the alluring madness of commercialism, where does our freedom stand?
I will not try to complicate things as they already are out there. These are three forms of freedom that we believe all of us should have/be enjoying/fight for. Yes, like the faces of love, freedom comes in a lot of forms. These are three of them.
The freedom to love. Just when you thought it only happens in teleseryes, there are still some people who live in the shoes of Romeo and Juliet in these modern times. There are still lovers in hiding, waiting for their own hearts to be free.
Being able to hold the hand of the one you love in public or tagging the name of your special someone on your cheesy Facebook status gives you that liberating feeling. The freedom to love is one of life’s greatest gifts. Make sure you are not restricted to get a hold of it.
The freedom to be you. Lady Gaga was bashed with protests of moralists when she was here for her ‘Born This Way’ concert tour two weeks ago. Are you the type who submit one’s self to what the society dictates? Do you exactly know the person the you are or who you should be?
These questions may seem too general but finding the specific answer may be a total plight for some or most people. We all have our own share of this world and we only got one lifetime to be who we want to be. Unless you want to be a butterfly on your next.
The freedom to dream. Sabi nga ni Jiminy Cricket, “When your heart is in your dreams, no request is too extreme.” This comes in connection with the freedom to be you.
Our dreams are the vast extensions of who we are. They say a lot about our personalities and dreams, if suppressed or left unrealized, a part of us dies even when we’re still breathing.
Advance Happy Independence Day to us Filipinos! May this national holiday achieve its truest meaning inside all of us. Embrace freedom.
