What’s inside your Balikbayan box?

Being far from family is probably the hardest part for every overseas Filipino worker who tried his/her luck in a foreign land. I suppose we all have a family member, a distant relative, or a friend who works abroad in the hopes of giving their loved ones a better life no matter how difficult it could be.

Based on the feedbacks and everyday interactions on our Facebook Page, WOWBatangas has a lot of followers who are OFWs. And we couldn’t thank them enough for finding home in our website. After all, this is what we aim for – to make every Batangueño closer to home.

Batangueño OFWs miss a lot of things in our province – from food to festivals to places and everything there is in their hometowns. We have uncles and aunts in the US who would request for mom and dad for our homemade halayang ube. There are times they would ask for burong mangga but I don’t know if any request for this had been granted, haha.

Okay, so where am I heading in this article? Every time an OFW would come home, everybody gets excited. Of course you know why – because of their pasalubongs. Exciting huh?

What’s the usual pasalubong of a balikbayan? It depends on where the balikbayan came from. The following are all based on my own experiences and observations. So if you have yours to add, share them through our comment box! 🙂

Balikbayan from Switzerland would bring home lots and lots of chocolates. Switzerland is famous for chocolates and Nestle products.

Balikbayan from Las Vegas, USA would bring home playing cards and giveaways from hotels and casinos.

Balikbayan from Taiwan would bring home toiletries such as shampoo, conditioner, body wash, that we can’t tell which is which for the writings are all in Chinese characters! All we’re sure of are toothpaste and soap bars.

Balikbayan from California would bring home Spam and other canned goods, chocolates, mashed potatoes, cereals, and other one-cook products that reflect how lifestyle in the US is – always in a hurry.

Balikbayan from Italy would bring home a scented rosary and other religious pieces, herbs and spices, and if you’re lucky enough, jewelries and leather goods.

I know I’ve missed a lot on this list, so if you’re one of our dearest OFWs, might as well share with us your pasalubong stories.

And friends, let us not forget to show our appreciation to these people we considered modern day heroes. They are sacrificing months and years away from home just to provide a more stable and secured financial status for their loved ones.

Whatever’s inside their Balikbayan box, don’t miss the most important content – intangible but priceless. I hope you know what it is.

Thank them. Thank them as much as you can. 🙂
