Smart Communications, Inc. (SMART), in coordination with the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC), has set up Libreng Tawag booths at the Calapan Pier in Mindoro and Batangas Pier. The facility provides free calls to families and relatives of the passengers and crew of M/V Baleno 9 which capsized off Batangas late Saturday evening.
Meanwhile, SMART also provided Internet connectivity to enhance PNRC’s emergency response and coordination efforts in Calapan. Roll on-roll off (RORO) passenger vessel M/V Baleno 9 was en route from Calapan Pier to Batangas last December 26 when it listed before sinking off Verde Island in the province of Batangas.
The National Disaster Coordinating Council reports that a total of 62 passengers and crew were rescued. SMART employee-volunteers from its Network and Platforms Services Division, Retail Merchandising Group, SMART Bro Calapan Sales Team, and the SM Lipa Experience Center set up the Libreng Tawag booths as part of Kabalikat, the company’s corporate social responsibility and community service program as well as the community care program of the Experience and Community Relationship Management of Customer Care.
