Discovering The Shop Around the Corner (Finally)

In the heart of Lipa City lies a gem of a hang out, a furniture shop, and an ideal dating place all rolled into one nook.

The store’s name perse makes the place all the more interesting. The Shop Around The Corner, the name of the aforementioned niche, is derived from a 1940s flick of the same name. Shop Around The Corner (the movie) which starred Margaret Sullavan, James Stewart, and Frank Morgan deemed to be one of the owner’s favorites of all time and proved worthy enough to be the establishment’s moniker. At the same time the shop stands tall at one corner on Kap. S. Luz Street so the branding of the establishment wasn’t exactly that hard.

Owners Igan Aragon, Thea Sace-Aragon, and Jay Ann Aragon started The Shop Around the Corner (TSATC) in April of 2010. It was at first, only meant to be a showroom for Jay Ann’s custom-made furniture with a small cafe on the side.

inside the Shop Around the cornerUntil they decided to have the place entirely as a cafe and retail shop for women’s accessories and decorative pieces. Almost everything that adorn the place are for sale items. While they serve as attractions, these items have price tags. 🙂

The place, for now, can hold up to 50 persons. TSATC is now open for intimate gatherings (birthday parties, seminars, baptismal, exhibits, etc.) as long as the number of guests could fit into the cafe’s space.

TSATC’s menu ranges from variants of coffee beverages, cookies and other desserts, pastas and paninis. I bet we should try their tulingan fettuccine.

Shop Around the Corner has a regular following of college students to groups of people sharing the same interests. A mini library and a free wi-fi service indeed make this place ideal for students. Their food and drinks, too, would not murder one’s purse. See attached photo of the menu and corresponding rates.

SATC's crew members, Thea, and IganSo is it like my Starbucks? You might ask. And I would say yes but minus the 24/7 congestion and the presence of men with bwarsh-bwarsh accent. In this place, you could actually enjoy the company of your peers since it’s not that, if I may say, too mainstream. People wouldn’t primarily go to SATC to take a picture of labeled cups and post it on Facebook afterwards. People come to TSATC for the sheer joy of plain old having a good time and good food with friends.

Just look for that intricate door somewhere along the busy Kap. S. Luz Street in Lipa City, go in, proceed upstairs and experience one of the most intimate occasions you could ever spend with your loved ones.

The Shop Around the Corner, or ‘sat-cee’ (I often use the acronym SATC) as I told Thea how I call their cafe, is a place for people with an artsy soul, for those who want some “me” time, or a sunset ‘til evening chitchat. We have a couple of cafes around town but this one’s the closest to what could provide you that “next to home comfort”.

mini library at the Shop Around the CornerI commend the way they put things together. Frankly, the first time I heard about the place, my mind was kind of clouded with question marks as their Facebook Page’s About reads these description: “The Shop Around the Corner – Retail Shop – Custom-made Furniture – Interior Design – Cafe and Gelateria”.

And then all my questions were answered in yesterday’s visit. Thanks to Thea and Igan. It was actually a nice interview we had there. It seemed more of like a friendly, casual conversation even. The couple’s very nice and accommodating.

Ang TSATC ay perfect tambayan ng mga homebodies. Kung hindi ka naman mahilig lumabas ng bahay pero sawa ka na sa kung anong palagi mong nakikita, dito ka pumunta. It would not seem like you’re somewhere unfamiliar.

On my next visit, I’ll try their pastas and I’ll definitely tag some friends along. Wink.

accessories for sale at SATCI finally found the ultimate place that I’ve been looking for. An artistic place that’s quiet though ‘pag labas mo, bulaga! Ang ingay kasi nasa city proper ka. But I don’t care. I don’t mind the noise outside.

TSATC – a good place for lovers, friends, business people, or even for yourself alone. A friendly café I can say.

I really don’t know that a café like TSATC is existing in Lipa. The Shop Around the Corner is simple but really an interesting place.

How to go to The Shop Around the Corner? Upon reaching the Lipa City Proper, head to the corner of Kap. S Luz Street where you will see Mister Donut then Zagu and there you’ll see the TSATC signage. The cafe is located on the second floor of the building.

If you want to have reservations, you can contact them at (043) 757-4580. TSATC opens at 12nn and closes at 10pm.
