Maliputo Festival Cookfest Showcases Delightful Recipes of Its Valued Fish

In celebration of their town’s 58th Foundation Day, the people of San Nicolas held the 7th year of Maliputo Festival Cookfest last Friday, August 9, 2013.

The cookfest’s main aim is to let people taste various delectable dishes of maliputo. As Ms. Nelinda Castillo, Tourism Officer Desinate, put it, “upang ipatikim ang tunay at katakam-takam na maliputo”.

22Two representatives from each competing barangay were provided two kilos of fresh maliputo which they will use for their chosen recipe. They were given two hours to finish their contest entry. As they prepare and cook their maliputo, judges roamed around to observe the contestants in accordance to the criteria below:

Workmanship – 30%
Taste or nutritive value – 25%
Creativity and Originality – 20%
Presentation – 15%
Speed – 10%
Total – 100%

12If the only maliputo dish you have tried so far is sinigang or inihaw, then you will be delighted to see mouth-watering recipes done in this cookfest such as sweet and sour, steamed, maliputo with butter-lemon sauce, crispy maliputo with butter cream sauce, maliputo in garlic brandy sauce, grilled tropical maliputo steak, paksiw na maliputo sa gata, a dish called maliputo al ajillo, and spicy maliputo curry.

Brgy. Bancoro’s Maliputo in Garlic Brandy Sauce was declared the winning dish in the cookfest. The representatives received P10,000 + certificate. Second prize went to the representatives of Brgy. Poblacion who cooked Grilled Tropical Maliputo Steaks and they received P7,000 + certificate. Third prize was awarded to representatives of Brgy. Bangin who cooked Crispy Maliputo with Butter Cream and they went home with P5,000 + certificate. The rest of the participants received a consolation prize of P1,000 + certificate.

3Judges of the Maliputo Festival Cookfest 2013 were Ms. Nikki Matienzo, HE Teacher, Ms. Josephine Dela Vega, TLE Teacher – San Nicolas Academy, and Ms. Celestina Serrano, TLE Coordinator and Principal – Sinturisan Elementary School. Event sponsor was Feedmix Specialist Inc.

The rest of the participants were from barangays Abelo, Balete, Baluk-baluk, Bancoro, Bangin, Munlawin, Hipit, Maabud North, Maabud South, Pansipit, Calangay, Talang, Tagudtod, Poblacion, Alas-as, Pulang Bato, and Santo Nino.

Gracing the event are the LGU Officials of San Nicolas headed by Hon. Mayor Epifanio R. Sandoval and Hon. Vice Mayor Alfonso B. Biscocho, Major General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang, Jr. – AFP Commanding General Northern Luzon Command, Cong. Sonny Collantes of 3rd District of Batangas, Cong. Nicanor Briones of AGAP Partylist, KALIPI, and DepEd.

Promoting ecotourism

In his speech, Mayor Sandoval proudly shared that the pilot ecotourism masterplan was chosen to be done in San Nicolas among the 31 municipalities and 3 cities of Batangas.

This ecotourism plan includes protecting maliputo, the bird sanctuary, as well as the Pansipit River, which is the only exit of Taal Lake.
