Tanauan City, Batangas History

Visit the Tanauan City, Batangas page for all information on Tanauan.

Tanauan City got its name from a noun and a verb. The first one is from a shrub called “tanawa” which grew profusely in the area. The second one is from the Tagalog word “tanaw” which means “to look after through the window” (lifted from www.tanauancity.gov.ph).

Being dubbed as the “Cradle of Noble Heroes”, Tanauan City is home to the Brains of the Revolutions, Apolinario Mabini, and to the 3rd President of the Philippines, Jose P. Laurel.

It was recorded in the early accounts of Tanauan’s history that the town was then situated on the outer boundary of Taal Lake and was transferred to its present site in 1754. Tanauan became a first class municipality in 1996. And on March 10, 2011, by virtue of Republic Act 9005, Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo signed into law the converting of Municipality of Tanauan into the City of Tanauan.
