The Good Old Board Games (Who Are Still Playing?)

As street games were replaced by online games in the turn of the decade, our much loved board games then were dethroned by game consoles. And that’s a sad fact.

During the long weekend, I found some loose tiles of our Scrabble while cleaning my dusty wall shelves. I remember how our family played for hours of Scrabble matches. And get cheated on by the greatest cheater of all time. Me. Well that’s for using slang words, haha.

What board game were you fond of playing before?

Tell me if you went crazy over these board games.

Snakes and Ladders. Remember how you hated to fall off from the top a few squares before reaching the 100th tile? Trivia: The game originated in India. The game, historically, depicts one’s journey through life with lessons on morality as implicated by virtue (ladders) and vices (snakes).

Monopoly. Ang board game ng mga sosyal, haha. What I like about Monopoly are the pieces that you get to play with or hold on and make you feel like a millionaire.

Chinese Checkers. We used to have this but I actually never learned how to play it right, haha. This game is played with strategic ‘hopping’ across the ‘home’ or the other end of the board (opponent’s side).

Game of the Generals (a.k.a. Salpakan). This one’s truly Pinoy as it was invented by Sofronio H. Pasola, Jr. in 1970. Hindi ko din ito nalaro ever, haha. Think of Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin or Tayong Dalawa. Wink.

Scrabble. Oh, the good ol’ board game. If you’re a fan of word games, then at one point in your life, I bet you had been hooked to this.

To make sure nobody cheats, meron kami laging makapal na Webster’s Dictionary to check if the word laid by the opponent is existing. Mai-try kaya ang beckimese minsan? Haha, puro salitang pang-beki lang. Chos!

Not only that. We had this Batman and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles board games which my brother and I used to play each and every day until the board succumb to its natural death.

Do you miss these board games? I do. I wonder if there are still some who play any of these, the actual and not the online version.
