My team went to Padre Garcia yesterday for our “field day” tasks and before heading back to Lipa for another scheduled meeting, we dropped by the church there.
And then Joel segued to the stalls beside the gym. For a moment I stared at the items on one particular stall — plastic balloon, pogs, jack stone, palamig, burong (fermented) cherry, tamarind candy in a large jar. For a moment I remember my childhood.
Admit it, we love looking back on the days when we were little; on the things that used to complete our day; on the memories that contributed to a happy childhood.
I was quite surprise that those things were still present pa pala on sidewalk stalls just like the ones we saw in Garcia yesterday. I will never forget how my brother and I would compete on creating the larger balloon and how icky it tastes when you roll it inside your mouth before giving it a blow. Haha.
Pogs! How many pogs have you collected before? There are a lot of companies which produced their own designs of these discs. Remember how it was so delighting to own a tall tower of pogs? That’s happiness.
Jack stone or jacks. May naglalaro pa kay ng jacks ngayon? Don’t ask me if I’m a champ on this one, I already accepted the fact that I will never be a pro on the tricks, haha.
Fermented cherry and tamarind candy. You might still see these on sari-sari stores or sidewalk stalls around your town. For as long as there are cherry (the native kind) and tamarind trees growing, Pinoys will come up with various ways of presenting/cooking such fruits.
And the palamig. This is a staple drink on sidewalk stalls. It’s basically flavored water plus strips of gulaman (sometimes with sago).
See, little things like the ones I’ve mentioned have stories to tell. They may have been forgotten as time gets old but when you see them again, you know you have your own memories to look back to.
Why not try walking around your town? We get so much used to heading to the favored malls and shopping centers that we unintentionally ignore these humble stores around.
