Have you heard of the Coffee Academy? It is a recent project of the Department of Education (DepEd) which was launched in Pinagtongulan National High School in Lipa City, the home of the kapeng barako.
You’ve learned about the newly implemented K-12 program of DepEd which aims “to produce graduates who are equipped with knowledge and skills to prepare them for the world of work or college education”. This Coffee Academy will be part of that K-12 program for the Batangueño high school students in Pinagtongulan.
The Coffee Academy will teach the senior high school students the coffee growing technology. This is like hitting two birds with one stone, why? Because with this program, the students will acquire new skill and at the same time, Lipa City will have the younger generation to help revive the glory of kapeng barako in the province.
“The academy is envisioned to produce students who have the technical know-how on research, cultivation and production of the famous Batangas coffee,” said Education Secretary Armin Luistro.
What do you think of this program? We have high hopes for our local coffee. Batangas, Lipa City in particular, has been known as the Coffee capital of the Philippines back then. It’s time we regain the title.
With Coffee Academy and the young Batangueño students, the kapeng barako industry will keep on brewing for its life and redeem the strength it once possessed.
