The Major Major Comment that Struck the Nation

“What is one big mistake you’ve made and what did you do to make it right?” If you were Venus Raj, how would you answer this question?

It seems that Filipinos still can’t get over with Venus Raj’s “major, major” statement in the crucial question and answer portion in Miss Universe 2010 finals night. Major, major… in Filipino, bonggang bongga! 🙂

I supposed I’m one of the first viewers who posted “major, major” on Facebook. On Twitter, celebrities I follow tweeted almost the same comment on Venus Raj’s response to William Baldwin’s question. And in an instant, this “major, major” remark became the statement of the day. Tadaaa!

The question and answer portion, in every pageant/competition, is definitely the most nerve-wracking part for a contestant. Hey, there are local pageants nowadays where the questions are given away before the finals. Still, there are those who can’t keep their senses together when it’s his/her turn to come up with an applause-worthy answer. It’s normal. You can’t blame the person, the nerves are doing the wrong projection.

Yesterday, after Venus’ turn in the Q&A portion, we (our two OJTs Deo, Jane and I) were talking about how she could’ve answered that question. And then we thought of why our candidates don’t take advantage of having an interpreter? Is it because we Filipinos are known to be fluent in speaking English? If a candidate would answer in Filipino, chances are, she could express herself better. (PHOTO CREDIT: Major Major (Venus RAJ) Facebook Page)

In Venus’ Raj’s case, the tension must’ve striked her so bad she gave out an inappropriate answer. The question was about a mistake she has done yet she answered about not having encountered a major (major) problem in her 22 years of existence. Good thing is, Venus was so transparent she admitted having stage fright (but she’s good at concealing it ha).

So the entire Philippines are still buzzing about the ‘major, major’ answer of Venus Raj. Haha, another most unforgettable quotation straight from Las Vegas! But still, we are very proud of you. I hope people won’t try to pull her down just because of that. C’mon, it’s over and done! She may not have won the crown, but she’s also a winner. Let’s just be happy for her.

  1. Cge na nga, i’ll be happy for her na lang…

    • Sayang man pero karangalan pa rin na maging 4th Runner-Up s’ya. If you’re in her shoes, how would you answer the question? 🙂

      • Hi, Dyan!
If I were in her shoes, I’d first have to make up my mind to go for the title rather than choose to settle for any place. Then maybe, I can make up a better mind to answer the question- or any question for that matter.

        • Hello DSJ! Aliw ang comment mo 🙂

If I were in her shoes, this would be my answer:

Not going the extra mile to search for my dad would probably be the biggest mistake I’ve done so far. I don’t know if my life could have been better or not if I have found him, but I am still a part of him as he is a part of me. We Filipinos value our family so much and I would take this wonderful opportunity to finally begin the journey towards my father’s arms. 🙂

      • hehehe, ewan ko ba dyan? Hindi naman kasi problem ang tinatanong sa kanya kundi mistake eh. At isa lang ang naisip ko when I heard of the question, the mistake of not having to show much affection with the ones I love when they are still alive. How I made it right? I’m now cherishing every moment with the people who are loving me, so I won’t have any regrets again.

  3. It took me 49 years to conquer “some” of my stage fright, and to realize that people have different talents. Thanks to ILO, the AOTS, PLACE, among others. Some people are good in writing, some are good in cooking, some are really good at public speaking, and some in sales and public relations vice-versa “bad” at something else.
Except for some really exceptional people who are very good at almost everything – the real smart know how to employ/utilize the best people for the “talent” that they need.
Congratulations to Wow Batangas for your excellent work.
Nevertheless, we really need to promote further learning, update skills, conduct seminars and training for productivity, team building, product excellence — etc.etc. Never ending work.

    • Hi Tita Medz! There’s always room for improvement. It may take some time, it may take a decade or two to get better in what you do, and there’s nothing wrong about it. Thank you po for appreciating our work. 🙂

  5. With all the hope and uttering of prayers for her, guess what most of our reaction was after she answered that question: “HUH!? ANO DAW!?” ha!ha!ha!

Then it dawned on us.. She blew it.

Her reaction to a phone interview here in her very own philippines when asked about the ‘MAJOR, MAJOR’ issue: “Ok lang yun, nakapagdala naman ng award sa atin!”

What she does not realize, however, is that, she was just a breath away from taking the crown- consistently within the top 3-5 ranking in all categories, she has all the physical qualities that embody the title- her stance, demeanor, not to mention her exotic, tropical complexion color that can rival cleopatra’s and even better Helen of Troy’s thousand-ship record.

Why, she was everyone’s darling, for crying out loud.:-)

I believe candidates for these type of contests are subjected to a more intensive training after they are chosen. I also know that there is an exercise included in the training where they are given a templated set of guide questions & answers, and were required to memorize it by heart; in case they encounter questions near to or related, they can simply extract from their stock.

Now, whatever happened to the ‘Presence of Mind in extreme situation’ training?

Her ‘ok lang kahit ganun’ attitude seems to have gotten the best of her- at her tender age. And at 22, her attitude highly displays what could be the present generation’s heartbeat, too. Na ok lang even if you do not do your best, basta nagawa mo. Haaay..

    Yeah, she blew it alright.

    “OK LANG YUN, NAKA-4TH RUNNER-UP NAMAN,EY!”
(Pero may 3rd, may 2nd, may 1st pa, then the title. Too bad, 4th happens to be the least in the list, he!he!)

She can at best be described in one word: Sayang.

In a Batangueno’s lingo is even fit: SHUNGA.
