This weekend there will be another rush of commuters who will go to their hometown to observe Undas 2010. That means a bunch of people travelling to their respective provinces resulting to ‘no traffic’ days on the other side of the metro.
How do you usually observe Halloween?
Halloween here in Batangas may be quite different from how it is commemorated in Metro Manila. In the metro, there are Halloween parties here and there. Bars and top gimik spots have their own Halloween treats for the partygoers. They celebrate Halloween in a loud, festive manner.
Undas in most provinces also means a time to reunite with relatives and loved ones they only see this time of the year or during Christmas. Undas in provinces like Batangas is usually still observed in a traditional manner. You think so? Although there are Halloween parties and treats in some business establishments like bars and shopping malls here, majority of Batangueños still opt to commemorate Undas with their families, offering silent prayers to relatives who have long been gone on earth.
There are different ways on how we choose to observe Undas every year. It’s either you choose to commemorate it in a loud happy manner or in a silent traditional way.
But it’s not an issue of whether you are from the metro or from a distant province. It’s also not an issue of being stuck in the ‘then’ or living in the ‘now’. In the end, there’s only one thing that matters – you choose to remember those people who had been part of your life when they were still alive.
