(June 3, 2010) – A Mass at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Lipa will be offered on June 13 to honor the heroes of the last elections. Archbishop Ramon C. Arguelles will lead the Mass scheduled for 3:30 in the afternoon.
“We will thank God for the generally peaceful and credible elections in the province,” says the out-spoken prelate who threw his full support and weight for the holding of the first-ever automated elections in the country. It will be remembered that at the height of the debates on automation, he even pushed for Batangas to be a pilot area if ever the country would go for partial and not nationwide automation.
According to him, this avoided large-scale cheating and also election-related killings, which marred the otherwise peaceful election in 2007. He was referring to the burning of a school in the municipality of Taysan, which claimed the lives of several victims, mostly teachers manning the poll.
He commended the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting, the COMELEC, the Philippine National Police and the AFP for partnering to make this feat possible in the Archdiocese, which comprise the whole province of Batangas.
