“He entered Jericho and was going through the town and suddenly a man whose name was Zacchaeus made his appearance; he was one of the senior tax collectors and a wealthy man. He kept trying to see which Jesus was, but he was too short and could not see him for the crowd; (Lk 19:1-3).
Kung kayamanan ang pag-uusapan, mataas ang antas na kinalalagyan ni Zaqueo. Doon lang siya nakatataas. Subalit kung social status ang pag-uusapan, siya’y napakaliit. Oo, maliit ang tingin sa kanya ng madla, pagkat pinadndidirihan ang kanyang hanap-buhay.
“When Jesus reached the spot he looked up and spoke to him, ‘Zacchaeus, come down. Hurry, because I am to stay at your house today.’ And he hurried down and welcomed him joyfully. They all complained when they saw what was happening. ‘He has gone to stay at a sinner’s house,’ they said. But Zacchaeus stood his ground and said to the Lord, ‘Look, sir, I am going to give half my property to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody I will pay him back four times the amount.’ And Jesus said to him, ‘Today salvation has come to this house, because this man too is a son of Abraham; for the Son of man has come to seek out and save what was lost.” (Lk 19:1-12)

If we feel like we’re the worst kind of person in this world, strive to be Zaccheus. Climb up that tree and be like him. Bagamat minsang naging maliit at masama sa tingin ng madla, sa kanyang puso ay sinikap nyang maglaan ng puwang para kay Jesus at sa huli ay pinili nyang ituwid ang baluktod na gawain.
Yet Zacchaeus could have declined the offer. God is not about forced entry. The door must be opened from the inside. Kailangan nating magdesisyon upang makamtan ang awa, kapatawaran at biyaya mula sa Diyos. And to receive the gift means that our hands must be empty. There are things we must let go if we want to grasp the hand of Christ.
Sa kabilang banda ay naniniwala ako personally na gaano man magpakasama-sama ang isang tao, may kabutihan pa rin sa puso nito. Sikapin nating manaig ang kabutihang ito sa atin. We still have a chance like Zaccheus who used to be the bad tax collector. Tayo ay may Diyos ng Pag-asa at Diyos ng Awa. Hindi ba’t sa ating kwento ay si Hesus pa nga ang unang lumapit kay Zaqueo at syang unang nag-imbita dito?
Minsan may ilan sa atin na pinipiling maging masama na lang. “Eh ganito na ako eh, babalik din naman ako sa ganitong gawain eh, bakit pa ako magbabago, at magbabalik loob sa Panginoon?” Ito ay maling katwiran. Ibig bang sabihin, kung madumi na ang damit mo, hahayaan mo lang na maging tubal iyan forever? Hindi ka na ba mag-aabalang labhan ang marumi at mabahong damit? Mag-isip tayo mga kapatid. Ang buhay ba natin ay sa pasama o sa pabuti at matuwid? Mananatili na lang bang tayong bansot sa mata ng Diyos at kapwa? Sana naman ay hindi.
