Life Lessons from ‘Flappy Bird’

I sat on the couch, blocked all distractions, took a deep breath, and held the tablet like it’s the most precious thing in the world.

I found the ‘bird’ at the end of the line of the recently downloaded apps. I started tapping. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap. Then the ‘bird’ hit the first pipe and died just like that. Ilang taps lang at game over na agad.

*%&$#!@ you, Flappy Bird!

Currently among the most downloaded app on iOS and Android, Flappy Bird, is a bird flying game developed by Nguyễn Hà Đông, a Hanoi, Vietnam-based app developer and was published by .GEARS Studios. It was launched in May 2013 and was originally available for download in the App Store.

It gained popularity and later on became available for Android users. Now it’s among the most downloaded apps on both iOS and Android. And the one that’s causing a lot of people frustration, irritation, challenge, and cussing in between. Haha.

It was out of curiosity that I downloaded the Flappy Bird app. Aside from seeing a lot of celebrities posting either exasperation or new achievement in the game, my guy told me to download the app. Now I realized that he just wanted to annoy me.

Tap, tap, tap. Tapos kelangan mo lang iwasan yung pipes along the way.

It’s not the mechanics nor the “pouty” beak of the bird that makes the game complicated. It’s the player.

Flappy bird? Parang life lang yan.

Life Lessons from Flappy Bird

Life lessons from Flappy Bird, anyone? Read on and nod your head at the end.

You have the chance to get ready. “Take your time” applies to this app.

Tap. Tap. Careful, measured taps. It’s all about timing.

Pipes are lined up ahead, fly high, fly low. Struggles in life will always be there.

Flap, flap, flap. Go lang ng go! Kung may gusto kang marating, paghirapan mo. Sabi nga, nothing worth having comes easy.

Life is how you make it. It’s up to you kung hanggang ilang pipes ang kaya mong lagpasan at pagtagumpayan. Your score is not just an achievement, it’s also a reflection of who you are. How determined and focused you are.

Pag nabangga, dapa. Plakda. Eh pwede namang umulit.

It’s all about beating your best performance. That’s the challenge of the game. It’s basically about self-improvement.

Lahat ng bagay may katapusan. Game over. But then again, all you’ve got to do is to keep trying. Try more. Try harder. At the end, you will reap what you sow.

Flappy Bird and life in general, both teach us to be focused and determined, to fly high, to get low sometimes, to survive the pipes, to take multiple chances, to try again.

Happy flapping! 😉
