“Puso ng Paglilingkod: The Josefa Llanes Escoda Musical” tells life of celebrated heroine

Lipa City Actors Company (LAC)’s “Puso ng Paglilingkod: Josefa Llanes Escoda Musical” is based on the life story of famed Filipina heroine and Girl Scouts of the Philippines Founder Josefa Llanes Escoda.

LAC Creative Director Luisito Nario, in an interview with WowBatangas.com, tells that the story of Escoda remains relevant to this day: “Sa panahon ngayon na napakabilis ng buhay, naghahanap tayo ng direksyon, naghahanap tayo ng isang ina na magkukupkop (sa atin), at yun ay ine-embody ng character ni Josefa Llanes Escoda.”

Josefa Llanes Escoda was a Filipino civic leader and social worker, best known for her contributions to women’s rights and education in the Philippines during the early 20th century. Born on September 20, 1898, she co-founded the Girl Scouts of the Philippines and was a prominent advocate for women’s involvement in community service and national development. Escoda also played a significant role in the Philippine Red Cross and worked tirelessly for social reforms until her abduction and subsequent execution by Japanese forces during World War II, making her a symbol of courage and dedication to her country.

“Gusto naming i-intensify yung culture na ‘yon… yung culture of service and culture of community na kapag may sigalot, dapat lalo tayong mag step-forward,” Nario continues.

The Lipa Actors Company has been performing historical plays over the years, featuring the lives of known heroes and heroines and the common Filipino during times of war. Last year, LAC staged Bienvenido Lumbera’s “Hibik at Himagsik nina Victoria Laktaw”, a play that portrayed the plight of women during the American occupation.

“Importante yung pagkilala sa mga bayani… parang package yan eh.”

Nario expounds on the significance of honoring one’s heritage: “kailangan balikan natin kung sino ba ang mga bayani natin, ‘yung mga lolo natin, ‘yung nakaraan natin… doon tayo humuhugot ng inspirasyon kung paano tayo magpapatuloy.”

LAC’s musicals have successfully and creatively reintroduced notable Filipinos to today’s youth, removing the apparent triviality of the plays’ characters— humanizing and bringing them closer to the audience.

Next year, LAC aims to create yet another exciting installment to their series of historical plays.
