Padre Garcia Batangas has long been renowned as the Cattle Trading capital of the Philippines. While this recognition brings in a lot of pride to Garcianos and the province of Batangas, with it also comes the concern of animal waste management.
The Padre Garcia public market holds 20-24 cubic meters of animal manure per day which poses a great risk to the sanitation and health of the municipality and its residents.
However, Padre Garcia’s Local Government Unit and the Municipal Environment & Natural Resources Office (MENRO) saw an opportunity to turn this unwanted commodity into something that could help the farmers: REREFOSA.
Resource Recovery Facility Soil Amendments (REREFOSA) is animal manure combined with biochar and beneficial bacteria enzymes. This organic soil fertilizer is a safer and cheaper alternative to its artificial counterparts.
Animal manure is a valuable soil fertilizer that provides a natural source of nutrients, such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, which are essential for plant growth and development. Additionally, manure can improve soil structure, increase its water-holding capacity, and support beneficial microbial activity, leading to a healthier and more resilient soil ecosystem.
Padre Garcia MENRO Department Head Mr. Ruel Kasilag noted that REREFOSA could help preserve the environment and could definitely help the local farmers grow their crops and ultimately earn more.
